Boxing - Cotto vs. Margarito showdown starts shaping
Tuesday, 06.10.2008, 10:25am

The history of boxing sports back in its origin to ancient Greeks who were the first who played this famous sporting game and sent it all over the world. Boxing is an incredible game, which has its fans as well. Actually, it can be played by two players who are entertained with the same weight. The winner will be announced as soon as his opponent fells on the ground full of pain and tired and could not stand on his feet again, within ten minutes from his fall. Universally, boxing champions are hold, while most countries cooperate in them with their heroes and media as well.

The WWF is Coming to Town (Part Two)

This month the B5 Sports Channel is compiling a set of sports memories. Part One appeared on Thursday. Bradley scores early Upset of the Year contender
Sunday, 05.11.2008, 06:43am
Bad Left Hook Unofficial ScorecardRound123456789101112TotalJunior Witter101099999109999110Timothy Bradley991010101010910101010117Who'd have thunk it? Timothy Bradley, 24 years old and in his first pro fight outside of his home state of California, beat Junior Witter via split decision in Nottingham to win the WBC junior welterweight title. The split decision was a little bit ridiculous, and had Witter won, I would've counted it as highway robbery. I scored it 117-110 for Bradley, who largely dominated the fight against an aged-looking, unmotivated-seeming, totally ineffective Witter, widely regarded as (at worst) the world's second-best 140-pound fighter.Bradley was awarded the mandatory shot at Witter's WBC crown when Jose Luis Castillo failed to make weight for a fight against him in Cancun. Most of us felt that Witter would dominate the unseasoned Bradley, who had never traveled more than a car ride for any pro fight. But Bradley drilled Witter in the sixth round with a massive overhand right, putting the exclamation point on his momentum grab, and taking full control of the fight. The first five rounds were quite close, all up-in-the-air scoring affairs, and I gave Bradley three of five. If someone gave Witter the nod in four or even all of them, it's hard to argue. Eventually, it was Witter's total lack of offense that defined the fight, with Bradley pot-shotting his way to what most saw as a pretty definable victory. A career-starting splash of a win, really. So congratulations to young Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradley, the Palm Springs, CA, native who is your new WBC junior welterweight champion, and a rising force in the division. The loss throws Witter into no man's land. At 34, he started looking his age, or else he just wasn't mentally ready for the tough fight, perhaps buying the hype that Bradley simply was not ready to take on someone as smart and outright terrific as Witter can be. This loss takes Junior Witter entirely out of any Ricky Hatton sweepstakes, meaning he'll likely never see the fight he's been petitioning for forever. And he's still too much of a potential spoiler to get an easy pass into lucrative bouts in the division, which is now unquestionably ruled by Hatton, with the likes of Paulie Malignaggi, power-punching Colombian Ricardo Torres, Kendall Holt, and Bradley as his chasers.Witter will have to be lucky to find himself as anything more than a regional star like Andreas Kotelnik or Souleymane M'baye at this point. He could possibly find a fight with Kotelnik (who would be attempting to avenge a loss to Witter), but any big-money, international sort of affair is now out of the question. It's a little unjust and more than a bit unfair, but Witter is too good to walk into high-profile fights without a title. On this night, Timothy Bradley outboxed him over 12 rounds, and did so with aplomb. He deserves all the credit in the world. Witter's punches seemed to lack pop, and his offensive gameplan was simply to wait. The sixth round knockdown showed him waiting just a bit too much, and overall, the fight itself did the same. Also in Nottingham, super middleweight contender Carl Froch improved to 23-0 with his 19th knockout, taking out late substitute Albert Rybacki in the fourth round via TKO. Froch is the mandatory to Joe Calzaghe, who is now at 175 and will almost certainly never fight Froch, who will nonetheless spend the next couple of years calling Calzaghe out. He'd be better off just focusing on the realistic, perhaps a fight with titlist Lucian Bute, former titleholder Mikkel Kessler, or "titlist" Anthony Mundine.
Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Junior Witter v. Timothy Bradley

This is the first time that "Desert Storm" Bradley has fought not only outside of the United States, but outside of the cocoon in California. As for Rybacki, he's a late substitute for Denis Inkin, after Alejandro Berrio backed out, so it's excusable in many ways that he has no hope tonight. Rybacki's only even sort of credible win is over Tony Dodson, a fighter that Froch knocked out in the third round back in 2006.Showtime did a pretty good job salvaging this card, which was supposed to happen back in March with Froch-Inkin and Murray-Fewkes, alongside an EliteXC card. Witter getting American TV is good for everyone (particularly for Witter), and I expect he's going to outclass an underprepared Bradley. I don't think he'll knock him out, but I do think he'll dominate. And that's not a knock on Bradley. He's just not ready for someone like Witter, who is a world-class boxer. This special edition of Shobox starts at 10:45 eastern, and we'll be here. Our new format allows you to simply enter the comments section of this post and get live updates -- no refreshing necessary. It's really awesome, and makes the whole experience ten times better than it used to be. So stop in and critique the fights with us, or just talk some jive.NOTE: This fight is tape delayed in America, not live. Friday’s SmackDown: Shock Battle Royal Ending

Did anyone hear what happened two Fridays ago on SmackDown? They’ve only repeated the highlights about a dozen times. She claimed that his devastating choke hold has caused too many [...]
Witter looking to make a play for Hatton
Friday, 05.09.2008, 11:33pm
WBC 140-pound titleholder Junior "The Hitter" Witter is universally regarded as second-best. Second-best in his division, second-best in his country in the division, second-best at pretty much everything. But some folks will tell you that Witter should be considered the best 140-pounder in the sport. With Ricky Hatton trying over the past couple of years to find a home at welterweight (and failing), the mega-popular "Hitman" has returned to the 140-pound ranks for the time being, waiting on a May 24th fight against Juan Lazcano, part of a double-header with potential future opponent Paulie Malignaggi, arguably America's best 140-pound fighter.Where does that leave Witter?Junior Witter is 36-1-2 in his career. You can throw out the two draws, since they happened early in his career. And his only loss came in 2000 against Zab Judah. Eight years is so long that you might as well throw that fight out, too.Right now, who would you favor if the long-desired bout between countrymen Hatton and Witter came to pass? There are a ton of people who would pick Witter. I am, in fact, one of them. While he's often been content to just outbox his opponents and take a decision victory, Witter showed last year how destructive he can be, when he faced talented enigma Vivian Harris. Take a look at the KO, even if you've seen it before.Witter proved he has real power, for anyone that doubted it. When he's willing to take chances, he's as deadly as anyone in the division. He's also technically superior to just about everyone at 140, save perhaps only for Malignaggi, who can be extremely good defensively.Witter is somewhat comparable to Floyd Mayweather, Jr., who dominated Hatton with upper body movement and short, quick punching. Like he did against Mayweather, Hatton would be forced to work -- perhaps too hard -- to get in good shots on Witter. But before a Hatton fight could even potentially come off (and I believe it will), Witter has another American lined up before him. Tomorrow night on Showtime, Witter will face a challenge from top prospect Timothy Bradley (21-0, 11 KO), a highly talented young man with all the potential in the world. But is the 24-year old Bradley truly ready for a fighter like Witter? Conventional wisdom says no.Bradley doesn't have big power. But he's a student of the game, with a good trainer (Joel Diaz) who has seen big fights. He's going to have to find a way to block out the obvious hometown advantage that Witter will have in Nottingham. And after that, when he settles down (if he settles down), he'll have to find a way to out-box a terrific boxer.Bradley got this fight because an eliminator bout with Jose Luis Castillo was called off after Castillo couldn't come close to making weight. He's been rushed into a title fight, but you can't blame him or his team for taking it. Should he lose, they simply get back on the horse, because frankly, he's supposed to lose. And you have to admire his guts, because most guys with 21 pro fights and the prospect tag that Bradley carries wouldn't get into a fight where they're such a huge underdog. For Witter, this is about trying to kickstart his American branding, and trying to muscle his way into a fight with Hatton. For Bradley, this fight is more about trying to beat the odds, and leapfrog his way into the money fights in this division. The smart money is on Junior Witter. In fact, the dumb money, the moderately intelligent money, and the brilliant money are all on Junior Witter. This isn't one you can sugarcoat. Nothing will tell you that Timothy Bradley can or should win this fight. But they'll fight for a reason, that reason being that you just never absolutely know until the bell sounds. We'll be here tomorrow night with round-by-round coverage, scoring, and BSing during the fight, which starts at 10:45 EDT on Showtime. It's a rare chance for American fans to see Witter live, and a chance to see a very promising young fighter. Last word I've heard is that the co-feature will be Carl Froch against Albert Rybacki.
Mundine at it again
Friday, 05.09.2008, 11:11pm
Outspoken, always intentionally controversial super middleweight "titlist" Anthony Mundine has decided that not enough people are paying attention to his farce of a regional career, which continues with a third fight against Sam Soliman on May 28. In light of this, he has made the following, Bernard Hopkins-biting statement:"I'm a Muslim and I can't allow myself to lose to a Christian."Mundine (31-3, 23 KO) is an OK fighter, with a lopsided record built on wins over undeserving opposition. Remember the last time Mundine stepped up and fought a truly top-tier guy? Mikkel Kessler smoked him. Since then, the best fighter he's stepped into the ring with has been Danny Green, another OK fighter. What's really the most bothersome thing about Mundine is not his beliefs. He's entitled to them. He's free to think however he wishes, as far as I'm concerned. But he manufactures these things so that he can get any attention past his local surroundings. Bernard Hopkins says outrageous things to sell major fights, doing it as a businessman. Mundine comes off desperate and pathetic. It's kind of sad, really. He's also currently involved in a bitter war of words with ex-trainer Jeff Fenech. Fenech called Mundine's trilogy with Soliman "a farce," all while moving toward that fight with 49-year old Azumah Nelson. Mundine has challenged Fenech to meet him at middleweight. God help us all.
Peter's fight with Vitali set for October...for now
Friday, 05.09.2008, 07:46pm
Source:Ticker via Yahoo! While I wouldn't rush to buy a ticket for the show or anything, it's true: a tentative date has been set for the Samuel Peter-Vitali Klitschko WBC heavyweight title fight. It'll be in October, though the purse is still being negotiated and an exact date and venue are not yet set.If Sam Peter is in shape and shows up at his best, as he did against Oleg Maskaev, then he should be able to handle Vitali Klitschko. Vitali was a hell of a fighter, but it's been four years and not so much as a tune-up fight. It's been four years and a handful of abandoned comeback attempts that couldn't make it through one training camp. Ring rust is going to be a major factor. Peter's inactivity, in comparison, makes him look like a once-a-month fighter.I hope this goes through and gets settled and we can get it over with. If Vitali wins, then fine, whatever. But if Peter wins, then let's cut through all the B.S. and red tape and get to Peter-Wlad II. It's the only heavyweight fight anyone really wants to see.In other news,43-year old Jeff Fenech and 49-year old Azumah Nelson are going to fight for a third time. Hopefully no one gets hurt, the enjoy themselves, and they get a decent little payday out of it. I don't begrudge guys fights like this, but who wants to see them? Anybody? Bueller?
Zab Judah Shatters Glass, Fight Postponed, Jaw OK
Friday, 05.09.2008, 06:00pm
Do you remember Zab Judah’s wobbly 2001 first-round knockout from Kostya Tszyu? After getting flattened he immediately pounced back up only to have his legs and equilibrium double-cross him all while telling the ref he was OK. Imagine the same betrayal happening in a Las Vegas glass shower. Because those are the reports coming from [...]

A few notes from me on the new BLH
Friday, 05.09.2008, 07:29am
Again, this change is all for the better. Our sidebar schedule will be taking a backseat to the schedule feature in the toolbar near the top of the blog, which has a few kinks at the moment that we'll get worked out.Use the FanShots feature heavily, and the FanPosts as well. If you see a cool photo or story or something that you want to bring to everyone's attention, then use the FanShots. If you want to share something more substantial with your own thoughts, use the FanPost. As you've probably heard, Mosley-Judah has been postponed for the time being. Some are saying that Shane's wife is working to have it fully forgotten about, which could mean Shane would take an easier fight against Ricardo Mayorga and hope to fight Miguel Cotto again in the fall. But the official word from Richard Schaefer is they're working on securing a new date. I'm not the biggest fan of the Mosley-Judah matchup, especially as a PPV with that super weak undercard they'd put together, but it's sure to be a good fight, so here's hoping we still get to see it, unless something amazing comes up.I also highly recommend using the "Wide" display in the top block on the left side, especially if you're on a large resolution monitor. We're coming up on a nice "special" Shobox card on Saturday night, with Junior Witter taking on Timothy Bradley, and we'll take a look at that fight and the rest of the 140-pound division sometime later today.
Welcome to the new Bad Left Hook and SB Nation
Friday, 05.09.2008, 06:15am
Hey Bad Left Hook,Today is the big day. We've switched your community over to the new SB Nation sports blog platform. My name is Trei, and I'm here to help you get adjusted to the new home we've built for you. If you have questions or trouble with the new system, post a comment in this thread and myself or one of the team (lovitt,sixfoot6orodacrem) will try to point you in the right direction. Before we begin, I want to let you know we still consider this a beta platform, so don't be surprised if you find a few bugs or if everything isn't exactly right yet. We hope you'll take the time to report any problems you encounter atbugreport@sbnation.com. We'll be continuing to make changes and improving things. Please take a few minutes to read about what's new below. But if you just can't wait to jump in, here are some quick things to check out:Sign up for your SB Nation network accountand claim your old blog accountsOnce you're logged in, press yourZ key in any thread with new commentsExploreyour dashboardand setup your profileReadthe guideto the new FanPost editorInstall theFanShot bookmarkletand post videos to Bad Left Hook from YouTube or images from FlickrClick the "Rec" button on posts and comments to help other people find the good stuff.Customize display options on your Edit Settings pageWhat Has ChangedSB Nation Network Accounts - the Big ChangeReaders across all of our blogs told us they wanted one account to use on every SB Nation blog. To make this work, we're requiring that everyone create a new SB Nation network account. In most cases you should be able to keep your old username, but a few of you may have to choose something new, since every other community in SB Nation will be going through this same transition. We tried to be as fair as possible in deciding who gets to keep which name, using a formula that takes into account length of membership and frequency of activity. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to participate on all of our blogs, but we don't want to encourage everyone to start visiting rival team blogs and initiating flame wars. To maintain friendly communities we ask that you explicitly join each blog in order to participate. It's a two-click process, but it does means accepting each blog's community guidelines. Just as you join each blog individually, you can be banned on each blog individually. You can claim old accounts from multiple SB Nation blogs, and your new username will be retroactively attached to all your old comments and diaries. So now you'll be able to access all your writings from your single profile page... like magic. To get started, click here to claim your old blog accounts and create a new SB Nation network account.FanPosts (the Section Formerly Known as Diaries)We changed their name. Why? Because we took this major upgrade as an opportunity to leave behind some vocabulary that never made much sense for a sports blog. SB Nation is the network of, by and for fans, and these are the blog posts we make. So we call them FanPosts. When you're at a bar telling someone to check out your online sports opinions, you don't have to suggest they read your diary.FanPosts are displayed differently on the homepage - we include your avatar to give more credit for the time you spend writing great posts. The new post editor has a WYSIWYG view that provides easy formatting. It also auto-saves drafts so you don't have to worry about losing your work when you compose a post within the web browser. And you can now associate teams, players and games with your posts: these tools promote your FanPosts on our new team, player and game pages - across the entire network. The new system does not work like the old diary editor. For example, in HTML mode the new editor doesn't auto-create a new paragraph from two line breaks. But it does offer a whole array of new features. Look for the blinking help button on the right side of the FanPost editor for quick tips, and take a look at ourfull guide to writing FanPostson the new platform.IMPORTANT - if you write your posts in Microsoft Word or some other off-line editor, you will get the most reliable behavior if you cut& paste your post into the HTML view of the FanPost editor. And if you do that, remember to wrap

tags around each paragraph so your text doesn't run together.Visual RedesignThis one is probably the most obvious change of all. Like other major websites working to improve readability for their audience, we've adopted a fixed-width layout optimized for the 1024 x 768 resolution used by the majority of Bad Left Hook and SB Nation network users. Use the switcher below the user menu if you prefer the wider layout designed for 1280 monitors. We've introduced a top navigation bar with quick links into old and new sections of the site. We also polished a few edges, made some things larger, others smaller and moved a few boxes here and there. More changes and adjustments to come.SearchWe've completely replaced the old search engine with a new one. We're excited to make it easier to find old posts and comments, but we've only taken our first pass on the tools we're offering. We're focused on making search even better than what you had before, so please know that we're aware search is missing key features and we're working on it.What's NewRecommending FanPostsSome writing deserves more attention and more conversation. If you want to bump a FanPost up to the top and keep it there for awhile, just click the 'Rec' link under the body of the post. When a FanPost receives enough recommendations it will make the recommended list.Auto-refreshing CommentsYou no longer need to refresh the page to see new comments. If you're logged in, new comments will automatically appear on the page every few seconds. When you post a comment, the page will not refresh either. If you want to quickly cycle through all the new comments, you can press the C key on your keyboard. Unmark a new comment after you've read it with the X key. And use the Z key if you want to umark comments as you're cycling through them.As you use these shortcuts to cycle through comments, press the R key to reply to the current comment. All these helpful keyboard shortcuts are listed at the top of each comments section for reference.Recommending CommentsNow you can reward those folks who take the time to look up stats and make smart arguments in the comments. Next to each comment there is an 'actions' link that you can click to find the recommend and flag options.Flagging CommentsTo help the moderators on a site, we've built-in tools that let you flag comments that are spam, trolling or just plain inappropriate. Only moderators can see those flags.FanShotsMany members of the community just want to post that one link, video, photo or quote, but don't need a full FanPost. We've got you covered: FanShots let you share YouTube videos, Flickr or PhotoBucket photos, quotes from articles, portions of chat transcripts, top 5 lists and simple links. If it's a video or image we'll put a thumbnail on the homepage when you post it.For those of you who are experienced internet hunter-gatherers of sports material, install the bookmarklet onto the links bar of your browser and share FanShots with the community from wherever on the web you find that killer quote or photo.ArchivesIt's much easier to find that post about a certain deadline trade or prospect retro feature. You can browse by year and month.AvatarsUpload an image so folks can see your custom avatar on your profile, your FanPosts, and all your comments.Network ProfilesNow that we have unified SB Nation network accounts, your profile will be your central hub for all of your activity on any blogs where you are a member.Network barThe top bar stays with you on all SB Nation blogs. It's a quick way to login and logout. When you're logged in, you'll see your avatar and screen name which links to your profile. The icon to the right leads to your Dashboard area where you can edit your settings, profile, account details and any FanPosts or FanShots you've published. As we add more blogs to the new SB Nation network, the My Blogs menu will be a handy way to navigate between the blogs you've joined.-------There are plenty more small changes and additions we've made, so please take a careful look around and explore this new system. We appreciate your patience and hope you'll help us improve the new platform for this and all the other SB Nation blogs. And in case you missed it, you'll want to start byclaiming your old blog accounts and creating a new SB Nation network account.

Remembering Diego Corrales
Thursday, 05.08.2008, 12:11am
One year ago on this day, the sport of boxing lost a great warrior when Diego "Chico" Corralespassed away at the age of 29.One year later, I thought it would be nice to simply look back on a few of Diego's most memorable moments.First up, of course, is the first fight with Jose Luis Castillo, and in particular, the miraculous 10th round. This one took place on May 7, 2005, two years to the day before Corrales died.I fully expect to live the rest of my life without ever seeing a more dramatic fight or more thrilling round of boxing, and I could live until 120 and see all the great fights in the world and probably still feel that way. This clip is from his totally uneven loss to Floyd Mayweather, Jr., when Mayweather just picked Corrales apart and destroyed him. But what's memorable about this, in my view, is that Corrales refused to stop trying to fight. He was massively behind, and you get to see knockdowns four and five of Corrales in this clip. And when his corner decides he's taken enough punishment and there's no way back, Corrales refuses to accept that reality. It was what made Chico the fighter he was. He had an unrelenting spirit.Next we take a look at his win over Acelino "Popo" Freitas, from 2004, his last fight prior to the first meeting with Castillo. Here is the latter portion of his first meeting with Joel Casamayor, a terrific fight that is somewhat overlooked. Casamayor, not Castillo, was Corrales' greatest rival.Last is the post-fight interview from his final bout, a lopsided loss at welterweight to Joshua Clottey. While Corrales was dominated, it again showed how tough-minded an individual he was as a fighter. Corrales never stopped trying to fight, even though he was getting smoked by a stronger, fresher fighter. He wasDiego Corrales, right until the end.The sport will never replace Chico Corrales, and we as fans will always miss him. A fighter truly worth fond remembrance, Corrales' career was filled with ups and downs, highs and lows, but never was there a dull moment.Rest in peace, Chico, and thank you again.
