Wimbledon Championship - England tennis event - history
Saturday, 06.21.2008, 11:44am (GMT)

wimbledon

The Wimbledon Championship is the oldest and most prestigious sporting event in the world of tennis. Wimbledon takes place in June / July and is the third Grand Slam tournament that is played in the year, preceded by the Australia Open and French Open, and is followed by the U. S. Open.

The tournament is in dispute as grass surface, being the only of its kind in doing so. the duration of the tournament is two weeks, but can be extended in case of rain. We play tournaments simultaneous individual male and female, male and female doubles and mixed doubles. He also played singles tournaments young men and women and doubles. In addition to this, there are tournaments with special invitations to retired players (doubles male older than 35 years and older than 45 and women's doubles over 35).

The first time you played the tournament was organized by "All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club" in 1877 at a track near Worple Road, the only singles matches were male. The tables were 22 players in the first year, 34 in the second and 45 in the third. In 1884 added the women's singles and men's doubles. The women's doubles and mixed doubles were incorporated in 1913. The tournament moved to the current location, at a track near Church Road, in 1922. The British are very proud of the tournament, although it is a source of national grief and humor (none has won the British singles event since 1936, with Fred Perry and neither has made any British woman since Virginia Wade in 1977).

In October 1940, the complex was bombed by German forces, who dropped five bombs one of which impacted on the roof of the Central Court while another destroyed the equipment room.

The central or main track is called Centre Court, and finals of the tournament always played there. Due to the unpredictability of weather, has proposed building a drop ceiling on the track. It is expected to be completed by 2009. The track number 1 was the subject of a major reshuffle in 1977. Originally it was adjacent to the main runway, but was replaced by a new stadium with great capacity for spectators. It was said that the runway No. .1 had a unique atmosphere, and was the favorite of many players, so his replacement was lamented by many.

The colors are green and violet traditional in this tournament. It is the only tournament which requires that clothing for both male and female is nearly 100% white. The players are always designated as "Miss" or "Mrs" (Miss or Mrs.) during the game (for example, when the referee says scores). The men, named only by his surname.

The tournament begins each year six weeks before the first Monday of August, and ends on the fifteenth day. Traditionally, not playing in the "Middle Sunday" (Sunday in the middle). Only three times in the history of the championship (most recently in 2004), rain forced into having to play "Middle Sunday".

During the first week, played the preliminary rounds, while during the second week will play the round, quarterfinals, semifinals and final.

The winner receives an individual male in a silver trophy. The female singles winner receives a silver tray, usually called "Rosewater Dish" or "Venus Rosewater Dish." The trophies were presented at other events. The prize money for 2004 were:

     * Single Male: £ 602.500
     * Women's Individual: £ 560.500
     * Men's Doubles: £ 215.000
     * Women's Doubles: £ 200.000
     * Mixed Doubles: £ 90.000

The figure shown for the doubles are divided into equal shares for each participant.

Wimbledon is the only offering monetary rewards higher for men than for women, while the U.S. Open, the Australia Open and French Open offer equal amounts for both sexes.
