Novak Djokovic wins Australian open and Serbia give him a welcome

“I think it’s a crazy house back in Serbia right now,” Djokovic said after the first men’s grand slam tournament in three years to be won by someone other than Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal and you would not bet against an official homecoming party on the streets of Belgrade, or his parents’ mountainside pizza and pancake restaurant being made into a national monument. Here at Melbourne Park, the Serbian fans did victory jigs outside the Rod Laver Arena with their flags and songs and giddy excitement.

First Serb: Novak Djokovic made history with his win in Melbourne
Still, most of the 15,000 spectators in the arena, including rock star Sting, would have preferred to see Djokovic lose. That was a little rough on him, given that he is only 20 years old and had beaten Federer in the semi-finals. But it was understandable, as the crowd hoped to watch Tsonga continue his remarkable, improbable run.
“Tsonga typhoon” read one banner backing the tennis phenomenon. And for a while it had seemed as though the Tricolor would be flying over the Melbourne slam as the Frenchman ranked 38 in the world came out swinging and slam-dunking. “I know the crowd wanted him to win,” Djokovic acknowledged in his victory speech.
I am so proud of myself and to be the first Serbian who won the Grand Slam title,” he said. “I think it will be a crazy house back in Serbia in my country, I love you guys.”
But he isn’t the world No 3 for nothing. He steadied his nerve during an entertaining final to achieve a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 win which suggests that he could possibly overtake Nadal as the second best player in the men’s game. “This is something I’ve always dreamed of,” Djokovic said, having lost his first grand slam final to Federer at last year’s US Open in New York.

The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found.
