Biography : Trapattoni was born in Cusano Milaninoon March 17 1939, in the province of Milan. He had a successful career as a player with AC Milan in the 1960s and early 1970s. Playing primarily as a defender and defensive midfielder with the goal to pass the ball to more creative players such as Giovanni Lodetti and Gianni Rivera, he played also for the Italian team, mostly as centre back with notable marking skills.

Trapattoni began coaching at A.C. Milan, first as youth coach, then as caretaker, and as first team coach in 1975. He then moved on to Juventus in 1976 and from there to Inter Milan in 1986, obtaining great successes at both sides. He returned to Juventus in 1991 before taking his first job outside Italy, as coach of FC Bayern Munich in 1994, and then from 1996 to 1998.

Trapattoni won six Serie A titles with Juventus and one with Inter Milan. He also led Bayern Munich, Benfica and Salzburg to league titles and managed Italy from 2000 to 2004. A number of names had been linked to the Republic post, with former England coach Terry Venables reportedly keen to be Staunton’s successor.

Giovanni Trapattoni is expected to be named the new Republic of Ireland manager after a Football Association of Ireland board meeting on Wednesday.The former Italy coach, 68, is poised to take over in May, once his contract at Red Bull Salzburg expires.The Republic have been without a permanent boss since Steve Staunton was sacked in October after a poor Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. Ex-Arsenal winger Liam Brady is tipped to be part of Trapattoni’s staff.Trapattoni is expected to take fitness coach Fausto Rossi with him to Dublin, while also appointing former star Claudio Gentile as his assistant.

Trapattoni is believed to have met a three-man FAI panel, which was set up to find a new manager, in Austria on Sunday. The former Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan coach, who has won league titles in four countries (Austria, Germany and Portugal as well as his native Italy) is expected to bring his backroom staff of Claudio Gentile and Fausto Rossi with him into the post.

Brady’s understanding of the Irish sports mentality, the respect he commands in the Irish game, and being able to speak Italian are considered important given Trapattoni’s limited English.
After a search led by Ireland caretaker manager Don Givens which took in at least 10 candidates including Gerard Houllier and Graeme Souness, Trapattoni emerged as a late challenger to the former England and Australia coach Terry Venables.

The Londoner had been the on-off bookmakers’ favourite for the position since Staunton was sacked and at the weekend broke his silence to insist he wanted the job.
However, he now looks to have lost out to Trappattoni - who is understood to have been given an initial two-year deal which will see him charged with attempting to get Ireland to the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

Trapattoni has one of the finest resumes in world football having every major European trophy but his four-year reign as Italy manager was unsuccessful and he was often criticised for his defensive tactics. He was not expected to be present at the rubber-stamping of his appointment in Dublin on Wednesday afternoon.

Staunton, Ireland’s most capped player, stepped down as manager in October after Ireland failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

The former Liverpool and Aston Villa defender had been appointed in January 2006 without any previous managerial experience.He revealed that one name had been endorsed by the selection panel and that a media conference would be staged on Wednesday.

If Trappatoni is confirmed in his new post on Wednesday, it will bring to an end a long trawl for the new Republic boss following Staunton’s sacking on 24 October last year. Salzburg team manager Heinz Hochhauser said: “With all due respect for Ireland, no-one in Salzburg is interested in who is their next manager.
“Our only interest is becoming champions again.”
