Defending champion Rafael Nadal, Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic and women’s top seed Ana Ivanovic all advanced to the third round of the Pacific Life Open with straight set wins Saturday.
Nadal, the No. 2 seed, beat qualifier Santiago Giraldo of Colombia, 6-3, 6-3.
The third-seeded Djokovic bested Italy’s Andreas Seppi 6-3, 7-6 (3) on another day plagued by cold, gusty winds.
Novak Djokovic held off a fightback by American Mardy Fish to win the Pacific Life Open final 6-2 5-7 6-3 in California today and secure his second prestigious ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) title of the year.
Two months after claiming his first Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open, the third-seeded Serb broke world No 98 Fish once in the final set before sealing victory in just over two hours.
“There is something in this desert air which keeps me going year after year,” said world No 3 Djokovic, the runnerup at Indian Wells 12 months ago.
“I am doing pretty good here.
Fish, ranked a career-high 17th four years ago, capped a remarkable week that featured three victories over top-10 players by stunning Swiss world No 1 Roger Federer in yesterday’s semifinals.
“This has been a tremendous week for me, definitely one I will never forget,” said Fish, who won the last of his two ATP titles in Houston in 2006.
“Yesterday was one of the best days of my life and this is my favourite tournament.”
The women’s final was won by Serb Ana Ivanovic, who clinched her first title of the year by hammering Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 6-3.
The 20-year-old top seed broke Kuznetsova, the second seed, three times in the second set to wrap up victory in one hour 21 minutes.
It was the sixth success of Ivanovic’s career and Kuznetsova’s third loss in a final this season.
“It’s a great victory for me,” Ivanovic said after securing the first Masters Series title of the year and beating the Russian for a fifth time in six meetings.
“When I managed to break her at four-all in the first set, it gave me confidence and I went strong from that point on.
“I was most happy about my aggressiveness today,” added the Serb, who hit 30 winners to Kuznetsova’s 14.
Kuznetsova, the 2004 US Open champion, conceded she had been totally outplayed.
“It’s always painful to lose, but I prefer to get to the final losing than to lose in second round,” the Russian said.
So, Novak won 9th ATP title and proved his the most dominant player this season. After winning the first Grand Slam of the season, Novak dominated in the season’s first Masters Series tournament. In front of 18.000 spectators, Novak won first set with 6:2.
In 2nd Novak won 2 break games and led 4:2 and it seemed it will be a fast finish of the match with Novak on serve. Though, Mardy made the match more interesting equalling to 5:5 in games, Mardy won a break and after a powerful service game won the set 5:7 to become the only player this year in Indian Wells who won a set against Novak.
3rd set started with 40:0 for Mardy on Novak’s serve, then Novak made 3 aces for 40:40, 1 service winner, and a point for 1:0 lead in games. In the following games Mardy (Fish) was caught up in Novak’s net and didn’t manage to get out. Soon it was 3:0 for Novak, 4:1, 5:2, 6:3.
Novak talked about the opening game of 3rd set: ‘That was a crucial moment and it was the turning point in the whole match, if I didn’t come up with the three aces, it could go either way’.
Novak’s thought about his season up to now: ‘It’s been a dream start, of course. Before I started playing this season, I said that my two goals is to be consistent with the results, I reach the Masters and hopefully win one Grand Slam. I did all that in very, very small amount of time’.
Novak: ‘But again, I don’t want to stop here, even though I’ve been playing fantastic, and I’m lucky enough to have a lot of important tournaments on this surface, which suits me the best, and I just try. I’ll try to keep going in Miami, and I’m defending champion there. But coming up from Indian Wells as tournament winner, it’s much easier to play’.
Mardy: ‘It would be really nice to take this momentum and take this confidence into next week, because next week is just as big of a week for me. I didn’t play last year. I think I put myself in a nice position now around 40 in the world with not a match to defend until August 19th, which I checked’.
Novak won additional 150 ATP points as he played in the Final last year (that earned him 350 ATP points) and is now a step closer to the leading duo, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Title brought Novak $550.000 in prize money, while Mardy won $277.000 in prize money also emense 350 ATP points which rocketed him from previous World #98 position to #40 position in this morning’s, Monday March 23rd, ATP rankings.

It promises to be a star-studded day the first Tennis Masters Series event of the year, the 2008 Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells, with the entire men’s sweet 16 set for action.
The 96-player field has been trimmed to 16 going into Wednesday’s action, led by No. 1 and three-time winner Roger Federer, No. 2 and defending champion Rafael Nadal, and No. 3/last year’s runner-up Novak Djokovic. Overall, there are 12 players in the Top 25 South African Airways ATP Rankings remaining in the draw.
Country Breakdown – There are 11 countries represented in the fourth round, led by Argentina, France, Spain, Switzerland, and the U.S. with two players each. There is one each from: Australia, Croatia, Germany, Great Britain,Korea, and Serbia.
Former Champions Remaining – All three former Pacific Life Open champions who began the tournament are remaining in the draw, led by defending champ Rafael Nadal, three-time winner (2004-06) Roger Federer and twotime title-holder (2002-03) Lleyton Hewitt.
Australian Open Rematch – One of the most intriguing matches on Wednesday is between No. 17 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and No. 2 Rafael Nadal. In their last meeting at the Australian Open semifinals, Tsonga fired 18 aces and defeated Nadal 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. The 22-year-old Frenchman was never broken in the one hour and 56 minute match and he went on to his first Grand Slam final (l. to Djokovic in four sets).
Davis Cup Preview – No. 8 Richard Gasquet takes on No. 9 James Blake in the last match of the day session on Wednesday. Next month the U.S. hosts France in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in Winston-Salem, N.C. Gasquet is 2-0 lifetime against the American, winning in straight sets at ATP Masters Series Toronto two years ago and at ATP Masters Series Paris last year. Gasquet, who advanced to the doubles semifinals on Tuesday (w/Robert Lindstedt), is the only player remaining in both draws.
Working Birthday – No. 23 Ivan Ljubicic turns 29 years old Wednesday and the Croat looks to break an eight-match losing streak against No. 1 Roger Federer. This is the third time in the last four years the two have met at the Pacific Life Open with Federer winning two tie-breaks in the fourth round in 2005 and 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals two years ago. Ljubicic is also attempting to reach the quarterfinals for the third straight year. Ljubicic’s last win over Federer came in the second round of Basel in October 2003.
Unseeded Quarterfinalist(s) – Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea plays Swiss No. 2 Stanislas Wawrinka in the only fourth round match-up between two unseeded players. It guarantees at least one unseeded player into the quarterfinals with two others still remaining (Mardy Fish and Tommy Haas). Lee and Wawrinka each have beaten two seeded opponents in their first three matches. Lee outlasted No. 5 David Ferrer in three tie-breaks in the third round Monday and No. 26 Jarkko Nieminen in the second round. Wawrinka beat No. 10 Tomas Berdych in the second round and No. 18 Marcos Baghdatis in the third round. The other unseeded potential quarterfinalists are Fish, who is the lowestranked player remaining at No. 98 (vs. No. 24 Lleyton Hewitt) and Haas, who plays No. 11 Andy Murray. Both players also have eliminated two seeds en route to the fourth round. (ATP Digital Services)
Federer opened at Indian Wells with an efficient 6-3, 6-2 victory over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, then seemed to shift his game into high gear as he overwhelmed Mahut. Federer had nine aces and won 96 percent of his first serves, Mahut had no aces and won 47 percent of his first serves; Federer hit 26 winners to the Frenchman’s seven.
“It was a perfect match, really, for me,” Federer said. “Just overall excited being back, happy to be playing well.
“I’m more sure I’m over the sickness.”
Sharapova said inconsistency made her match against Bondarenko difficult.
“I was like a little kid doing a beaded bracelet. I would put four beads together and they would all fall down and then I’d start all over again,” Sharapova said.
“I was just tough in the end, and it gets me through a lot of matches.”
She said she can’t always play “great, fantastic tennis,” adding, “But I’ve got to keep my concentration out there and keep my focus for longer periods of time.”

Jermaine O’Neal Pacers still expect
March 13, 2008 by bumeral
The optimism remains, but the thought of Jermain O’Neal and Jamaal Tinsley returning to the Indiana Pacers lineup before the end of the regular season seems to decrease as each game passes.Jermaine O’Neal is obviously unhappy, and why shouldn’t he be? He’s watched the Pacers go from just a piece or so away from contending for an NBA title to being a guaranteed lottery team. Mike Dunleavy Jr. has always been overrated, Jamaal Tinsley has worn out his welcome and Danny Granger, though talented, is still a year or two away from playing a key role for a playoff calibar team. Now might be the best time to trade O’Neal. He’s turning 29 this October and he’s scheduled to make about $18 million this season. With or without him, the Pacers are going nowhere, so they might as well go nowhere with more cap space and some future prospects to build around.
For the moment, we can safely say the recently reported four-team trade that would send O’Neal to Boston, bring Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum to the Pacers, send Kevin Garnett to the Lakers and a variety of elements to Minnesota is dead. In fact, it was apparently dead before it was reported. Sometimes, you see, parties involved in such trade discussions, sensing things are falling apart, leak strategic details to the media in an attempt to use public reaction to rekindle the deal.
“I’ve talked to (Minnesota boss Kevin) McHale but there was never anything mentioned about a four-way deal,” Pacers President Larry Bird said Tuesday during his pre-NBA Draft press briefing. “Obviously when Kevin Garnett and players like that are out there you usually call to see what’s happening. There’s a lot of speculation out there. We do get phone calls every once in awhile not only about Jermaine but about some of our other players. Right now it’s just all speculation.”
O’Neal still isn’t practicing but is doing individual work after practice, including playing one-on-one. Tinsley continues to be restricted to working on the sideline. The Pacers have only 18 games remaining. O’Neal has been out since Jan. 16 with a sore left knee. Tinsley has been out with a sore left knee since Feb. 5.
“Absolutely,” O’Brien said when asked if he still expects both players back this season, “but it’s one of those situations where I have no timetable to go by. I haven’t been given a timetable. I can’t afford to spend too much time from a coaching standpoint thinking about it until I know somebody is able to get on the court to practice.”

Roberto Manchini will stay in Inter as coach
March 13, 2008 by bumeral

Roberto Manchini, one of the most talented players of his age, Mancini debuted in Italian Serie A for Bologna on September 12, 1981. The following year he was bought by Sampdoria, for which he played until 1997. Later he played for Lazio (1997–2000) and Leicester City (2001).
With Sampdoria, he formed a dynamic strike partnership with Gianluca Vialli, and led the club to its only scudetto in 1991, four Coppa Italias (1985, 1988, 1989 and 1994) and a Cup Winners’ Cup in 1990. He also lost the final of the 1991–992 European Cup against Barcelona. With Lazio he won his second scudetto (2000) and Cup Winners’ Cup titles (1999) as well as two more Coppa Italias (1998 and 2000).
FC Internazionale Milano coach Roberto Mancini will stay on next season after discussions with president Massimo Moratti, reversing the surprise announcement of his decision to step down at the end of the campaign.
Mancini told a press conference after last night’s UEFA Champions League exit by Liverpool FC that his fourth season with Inter would be his last, despite a contract running until 2012. However, Moratti revealed on Wednesday evening: “I had a talk with Mancini, and he told me he wants to stay at Inter next season and for the length of his contract. He wants to win the Champions League with Inter next season. The situation is completely different to the one that was recounted to me and to the team this morning.”

Vucinic bravely dived for a Christian Panucci – Roma win Real lose

Similar to Milan, Real have a lot of injury problems this season. Robben got injured last weekend joining van Nistelroy and Drenthe and Sneijder and Metzelder are long out of the pitch. But regardless of that Schuster’s players are leaders of Primera form the first round and they didn’t have many troubles reaching the Champions League knock-out stage this season. The draw was favourable for them since they were paired with Roma against who they had a lot of success in the past. A defeat at Olimpico was the first after three successive wins and 2:1 score as well as the home ground makes them favourites. They managed to beat Huelva away on Saturday, the lead over their first runner-up in Primera is five points and this definitely booted Real’s confidence. Robinho and defender Pepe are back which will be a great advantage for Madrid side defense since Ramos is suspended for this match.
Real, needing to get a goal to avoid elimination, started to step up their efforts midway through the second half.
Raul saw his header just miss its target shortly before the hour but, with them pushing forward, Real were also leaving gaps at the back.
Vucinic came on in place of first leg goalscorer Mancini after 65 minutes and barely 60 seconds later the Serbian striker sent a Max Tonetto cross against the bar.
The critical point in the game came 20 minutes from the end when Pepe was given his marching orders after picking up his second yellow card for a foul on Vucinic.
Roma took just three minutes to take advantage of having an extra man when Taddei escaped his markers to beat Iker Casillas with a header from close range.
Real equalised just two minutes later when Raul got his 61st Champions League goal, and his fifth this season, with a right foot shot following a Robinho cross from out on the left.
The goal will be clouded in controversy as Raul looked clearly in an offside position but Greek referee Kyros Vassaras waved away the Roma protests.
In the end though, whether Raul was offside or not became a moot point.
In the last 10 minutes, Real threw everything at their Italian opponents in a bid to try to find a second goal and force extra time but again paid the penalty for having little cover at the back.
Two minutes into injury time, Vucinic bravely dived for a Christian Panucci cross and his headed goal clinched the tie.
Roma go into the Champions League quarter-finals for the second successive year while Real’s defeat leaves Spain with only Barcelona going into the draw on March 14.
Vucinic is man of decision. His biography said that – he having been signed at a young age, Vu?ini? showed remarkable promise early and was quickly snatched by U.S. Lecce. In his third (2004–05) season for the club, the 21 year-old Vu?ini? scored 19 goals in 29 games. Following that successful season, his progress came to a halt with only nine goals recorded in 31 games as his career stalled due to injury.Vu?ini? was one of the two Montenegro-born players who had been chosen to play for Serbia and Montenegro at 2006 FIFA World Cup (the other one was Dragoslav Jevri?); he had been capped already two times for the Serbia and Montenegro team, but on May 23, 2006 he got injured and could not participate to the competition.

Female Smokers at greater risk for cancer

PAIN: A SILENT EPIDEMIC -- True, drug addiction is a serious problem for many Americans, some of whom become hooked on prescription drugs after medical treatment. But chronic pain is also a huge problem. According to the American Academy of Pain Management, about 50 million Americans live with chronic pain caused by disease, disorder or accident, and another 25 million suffer acute pain after surgery or accident. In 2000, 36 million Americans missed work due to pain. Pain is a complex problem, and patients often have difficulties communicating their needs to doctors. And yet, there are many treatment options available that can be tailored to meet individual needs. If you or someone you love is not getting relief, do not give up. A good source of information can be found at http://www.aapainmanage.org/ SMILES VERSUS SNIFFLES -- Worried about catching a cold? Smile! A study conducted by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that people with a generally upbeat attitude who were exposed to cold viruses were much less likely to catch the cold than people who were sad, anxious, or angry. Positive thinkers who did come down with the bug tended to minimize their symptoms, so they still ended up better off than their more negative counterparts. FEMALE SMOKERS AT GREATER RISK FOR CANCER -- Women who smoke have more than double the risk of contracting lung cancer than men. That was the surprising result of a past study, in which CT screenings of close to 3,000 men and women showed that female smokers were 2.2 times more likely to develop the disease than men. It is not yet known why women are more susceptible than men. According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among men and women. In 2003 there will be about 171,900 new cases of lung cancer in the United States and 157,200 people will die of this disease. The study also found that annual CT screenings can make a big difference in detecting lung cancer early and improving cure rates, from 10 percent to up to 90 percent. TRACKING THE GENETICS OF DEPRESSION -- Depression is the second leading cause of disability in the United States and worldwide. Depressive disorders affect an estimated 9.5 percent of Americans ages 18 and over in a given year, or about 18.8 million people in 1998, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. So it is good news that scientists at the University of Pittsburgh recently identified 19 regions on human chromosomes that seem to hold the genetic key to mental illnesses such as addictions and major depression. These studies may help researchers develop more effective medications to combat the illness. For more information about depression, check out the NIMH web site at http://www.nimh.nih.gov/healthinformation/depressionmenu.cfm COLONOSCOPY CHOICES -- If you are 50 years of age or older, a screening for colorectal cancer could save your life, according to the Centers for Disease Control. These tests can reveal asymptomatic polyps or cancerous cells, which will then need to be removed. One of the most effective tests is a colonoscopy, in which you are sedated while a doctor views your colon with a flexible tube. Now you can also choose a virtual colonoscopy, a non-invasive process using a CT scanner. A recent study has shown the virtual CT scan method to be just as effective as the traditional one. However, the new test is more expensive - and may not be covered by your insurance. And unlike a colonoscopy, in which any polyps that are identified are removed on the spot, a virtual colonoscopy's function is limited to diagnostics. If one or more polyps are found, you will still have to have a colonoscopy to get them removed.

Cranberries can fight tooth decay and onions as cancer fighters

Sport nutrition – healt life :
IMPORTANCE OF RADON TESTING — The United States Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) is urging Americans to test their homes for
radon, a radioactive, invisible, odorless gas linked to lung disease.
Researchers say that January is a good month for such testing because
families spend more time indoors during the winter months. Exposure
to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United
States. The EPA estimates some 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year
are related to the gas. Radon comes from the decay of naturally
occurring uranium in the earth’s soil and can accumulate indoors to
dangerous levels. The EPA recommends houses with radon levels of 4
picocuries or more be fixed to prevent further accumulation of the
gas. For information about a discounted radon home test kit, contact
your state radon office, visit http://www.epa.gov/radon, or call
1-800-SOS-RADON.
PORTABLE AND SPACE HEATERS DANGER — Keep space heaters at least
three feet (one meter) away from anything combustible, including
wallpaper, bedding, clothing, pets, and people. Never leave space
heaters operating when you are not in the room or when you go to bed.
Do not leave children or pets unattended with space heaters and be
sure everyone knows that drying clothing over space heaters is a
major fire hazard.
TIPS FOR PROTECTING ANKLES — Icy roads make for injured feet and
ankles, which should be treated with ice, rest, and a visit to the
doctor, doctors say. “When the thermometer dives below freezing, the
office fills up with patients who have injured their ankles and do
not know if they have suffered sprains or fractures,” said Kris
DiNucci, spokesman for the American College of Foot and Ankle
Surgeons. Applying ice and elevating the leg help reduce pain and
swelling around the joint, he advises. The old adage that if you can
walk on it, it is not broken does not always hold true, and an
evaluation by a podiatric food and ankle surgeon is recommended to
set the sprains apart from the fractures, he says. Injury-preventing
tips include: keep areas around outside doorways well lit so ice
patches are visible, wear shoes or boots with traction soles, check
for slippery spots before getting out of the car, avoid high-heeled
shoes, and stretch and warm up before participating in sports.
CRANBERRIES CAN FIGHT TOOTH DECAY — Get ready to pamper your taste
buds and protect your teeth against decay at the same time as a new
research has revealed that cranberries are an important weapon in
fighting tooth decay. The British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) has
said that cranberries can prevent a host of oral health problems,
including gum disease and tooth decay. Following up on a research
carried out by the University of Rochester in New York, the BDHF
discovered that cranberry juice stopped harmful bacteria sticking to
the teeth. Cranberry juice also ensures that plaque never gets a
chance to form. “Cranberry juice is naturally very acidic. Every time
you drink something acidic the enamel on your teeth is softened
temporarily. If given time to recover, then your saliva will
neutralize this acidity in your mouth and restore it to its natural
balance,” says Dr. Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British
Dental Health Foundation. However, the researchers have cautioned
that the intake of cranberries should be limited to only the meal
times as its excess can have some harmful effects. “However, if this
attack happens too often the mouth does not have the chance to repair
itself and tiny particles of enamel can be brushed away. This is
called erosion. Erosion can cause pain and sensitivity in the teeth,
and once the enamel has worn away can also leave your teeth open to
decay too – so try to keep cranberry juice to mealtimes only,” Dr.
Carter added.
ONIONS AS CANCER-FIGHTERS — Cornell University scientists say
flavorful onions, such as New York Bold or Western Yellow, and
shallots can stop the growth of liver and colon cancer cells. “No one
knows yet how many daily servings of onions you would have to eat to
maximize protection against cancer, but our study suggests that
people who are more health-conscious might want to go with the
stronger onions rather than the mild ones,” says study leader Dr. Rui
Hai Liu. Researchers have known onions may help fight cancer, but the
new preliminary study, reported in the “Journal of Agricultural and
Food Chemistry,” goes a step beyond, comparing cancer-fighting
abilities among 10 commonly consumed varieties and shallots, which
resemble onions but, in fact, are a separate species. The types with
the strongest flavor had the highest antioxidant activity, an
indication they may be better able to destroy charged molecules
called free radicals, an excess of which is thought to increase the
risk of disease, particularly cancer, the researcher says.
COOL YOUR TEMPER – Are you a hot head? A less hostile outlook may
help keep your heart rhythms steady. Studies in men revealed that men
who are generally hostile or often openly angry may have as much as a
30% greater risk of developing irregular heart rhythms, such as
atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is a risk factor for stroke.
Instead, try to keep calm and under control even if something makes
you irate. Taking a walk, counting to 20, practicing some deep
breathing, and doing so stretching can all help to relieve the
tension you may want to let out. Instead of yelling or getting worked
up, recognize that something is making you angry and do what you can
to either eliminate it or avoid it. If you can keep your temper under
control, you could be saving your heart hundreds of unnecessary beats.
REDUCE STROKE RISK — To reduce your risk of stroke, keep green and
yellow in mind. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is
important for good health. However, green and yellow veggies may be
particularly good for reducing stroke risk. Daily intake of green and
yellow vegetables was associated with a 26% reduction in the risk of
death from stroke, compared to eating the veggies once or fewer times
per week.
HOUSEHOLD DUST CONTAINS PBDEs – Common household dust may be an
important source of a potentially dangerous class of chemicals called
polybrominated diphenyl ethers, U.S. researchers say. The team at the
National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Environmental
Protection Agency surveyed 17 U.S. homes and found high
concentrations of PBDEs in household dust, ranging from 700 to 30,100
nanograms per gram. Researchers analyzed both dust from floors and
clothes dryer lint for 22 variants of commercial PBDEs and found them
in every sample. PBDEs – used in consumer products as flame
retardants – can accumulate in human blood, fat tissue and breast
milk.
DVT INFO — Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that can form
in the legs or pelvis when a person is confined to a constricted
space for a long period. Besides being painful, DVT can turn fatal if
fragments of the clot dislodge and travel to the lungs where they can
trigger a pulmonary embolism. Airline passengers who find themselves
sitting for hours during a long flight are particularly susceptible
to developing DVT. By some estimates, as many as 100,000 airline
passengers may die from complications associated with DVT every year.
One of the most important things to be aware of with DVT is that it
can strike healthy people who have no previous cardiovascular
problems. In fact, people who exercise regularly are at somewhat
greater risk of DVT complications because they tend to have low
resting pulse, which may help prompt DVT during long periods of
inactivity. Others who may be at greater risk of DVT include: 1.
Those who have previously experienced DVT; 2. Those with a family
history of DVT; 3. Anyone who has experienced trauma to the legs; 4.
Those who have recently had surgery on the legs, feet, or in the
abdominal or pelvic areas; 5. Those who may suffer from diabetes,
heart or liver disease, or certain cancers, such as colon, ovarian,
stomach, liver, pancreatic, or lymphatic cancers; 6. Obese people; 7.
Those over the age of 40.
FIT FOR LIFE – A study of 9,925 women by a Texas research group
concludes that even though excess weight can shorten longevity,
physical fitness may have a more significant effect. Using treadmill
tests to determine the fitness levels of the subjects (with an
average age of 43 years), the researchers tracked them for 11 years.
They then compared the fitness levels of those who had died during
that time period. They found that the women in the lowest of the
three fitness groups died (of any cause) twice as often as those in
either of the other two groups. The women judged to be “moderately
fit” had been able to walk two miles in less than 40 minutes, three
times a week.
