OAXACA, Mexico, Mar. 1, 2009 .- Mexico Tour 2009 began on Sunday in the city of Oaxaca, southeast of the country, with the flag from the historic U.S. cyclist Lance Armstrong, seven times winner of the Tour de France.
Armstrong took the flag to the 160 cyclists who will travel 1320 miles in eight stages, with the governor of Oaxaca, Ulises Ruiz, and President of the Mexican Federation of Cycling, Reyes Armando Becerra.
The first stage of testing will take place in a circuit in the center of Oaxaca City, who will complete 12 laps for 94 kilometers.
Prior to the flag ceremony, Armstrong said he was “very happy to be here (in Mexico). This country and mine (United States) have much historical and cultural factors that are shared and that gives me great pleasure.”
Armstrong gave a speech in the Ethnobotanical Garden, located in the resort of Santo Domingo, Dominican of the sixteenth century building.
The U.S. added that cycling in Europe has a great expression, “a high level and that is required to expand to other markets and other countries and Mexico is one of them.”
After completing the first stage, there will be a drag Huajapan of the city of León (Oaxaca), the starting point of the second stage of the race to take a journey of 205 kilometers with target in the city of Puebla.
