With a roster that included future Hall of Famers Wilt Chamberlain, Pat Riley, Jerry West and Elgin Baylor, the Los Angeles Lakers went on to win 21 straight games to break the NBA record of 20 set by the Milwaukee Bucks the previous year. The Lakers went on to win 12 more games after that to set the new NBA mark at 33 before losing to the Bucks, 120-104, on January 9, 1972.

The Lakers finished the season with a 69-13 win-loss record and beat the New York Knicks, 4-1, in the best-of-seven finals.
